Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

In-person transliteration means the Cued Language Transliterator (CLT) is physically present at your location, cueing the spoken content directly in the room. Remote transliteration means the CLT works from another location, joining via a secure video feed. The CLT sees and hears the event in real time and their video is displayed on a screen or device for the deaf or hard of hearing consumer.
Both provide the same level of accuracy and fluency—the main differences are location, setup, and logistics:
In-person: No internet connection required for the CLT, but travel costs and scheduling availability may be factors.
Remote: Requires a stable internet connection and appropriate video setup, but allows access to CLTs anywhere and can save time and costs.

Yes. When the technology is set up correctly, remote transliteration is just as accurate and clear as in-person work. A qualified Cued Language Transliterator (CLT) can see and hear everything in real time through a secure video connection and cue at the same speed and accuracy as they would on site.
Remote transliteration can even expand your options—allowing you to work with highly skilled CLTs who may not be available locally, reduce travel costs, and schedule services more flexibly. The key is ensuring a stable internet connection, clear audio and video, and good screen visibility for the deaf or hard of hearing consumer.

For most situations, remote transliteration can be provided using Zoom, which works well for live cueing. You’ll need:
A stable, high-speed internet connection (wired or strong Wi-Fi)
A computer, tablet, or large-screen device for the deaf or hard of hearing consumer to view the CLT’s video feed clearly
A camera and microphone in the meeting space so the CLT can see and hear speakers and any visual materials
Adequate lighting in the room so facial expressions and mouth movements are visible to the CLT
Positioning of the CLT’s video window so the consumer can see it without blocking other visual information (slides, speaker, etc.)
Language Matters can guide you through setup and offer a quick test session before the event to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Anywhere. Anytime.
Remote Transliteration
Access without limits—wherever you are.
In today’s world, you don’t need a transliterator sitting in the same room to ensure full communication access. Remote transliteration allows a Cued Language Transliterator (CLT) to work from another location—while you or your students participate in meetings, classes, or events in real time.
How It Works
The CLT joins via a secure video connection.
The meeting, class, or event is streamed to them through video conferencing or specialized equipment.
They cue the spoken content live, and their video is displayed on a screen or personal device for the deaf or hard of hearing consumer.
Even if your meeting is in person and not “online,” you can still benefit from remote transliteration. With the right setup, a CLT can work from anywhere—no travel required.
