Jane Dolan Cooper, TSC

She’s Been Cueing Longer than You… Trust Me.

Jane was born the same year Cued Speech was invented—and it’s no exaggeration to say she grew up with it. Her sister, Leah, was the first deaf cuer, and their family was the very first to learn the system from its inventor, Dr. R. Orin Cornett. Jane spent her childhood transliterating in real-world spaces: Girl Scouts meetings, family events, church services. It shaped not just her skills, but her sense of purpose.

She has worked as a nationally certified cued language transliterator since 1996, serving in a wide range of settings and supporting deaf consumers with clarity, consistency, and care. Over the years, Jane has also worked as a program specialist at the Cued Speech Center in North Carolina, supported families at the Gallaudet Family Learning Vacation, taught cueing to learners of all ages, and served as a long-time instructor and mentor with Language Matters. She has trained and supported a generation of cueing professionals and is known for her calm, positive, and encouraging style.

Jane believes that adherence to ethical standards and proper practice is essential for delivering true access to deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Her leadership has extended beyond the classroom: she served on the North Carolina Interpreter and Transliterator Licensing Board, concluding her tenure as Chair.

Through every role, Jane works to ensure that those she teaches or mentors feel well-supported and confident in their readiness to serve. She is a steady presence in the field and a true professional in every sense of the word.
